2 centuries ago, on Sunday 24 April 1814, King Louis XVIII stepped off the ship 'The Royal Sovereign' from Dover in the early afternoon. After twenty years of exile, he set foot in France for the first time again and did so in Calais. His return to France put an end to the times of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Restoration.
