The Tom Souville monument in Calais pays tribute to this famous figure from the city's maritime history. Tom Souville, born in Calais on February 24, 1777 and died in the same city on December 31, 1839, was a corsair and rescuer, who was the origin of the first Calais lifeboat in 1819. He started his career at sea as a boy of 11 years and quickly became an experienced sailor. Between 1811 and 1815 he is said to have earned more than 5 million francs from his conquests. After his career as a corsair, he became captain of a “malle” (the ferries of that time) and led an active civilian life as a rescuer, member of the municipal council and administrator of the hospice. The monument to Tom Souville commemorates his adventurous life and his contributions to the city of Calais.
