Heldburg was granted town rights on December 2, 1394, the council is documented in 1396 and held the lower courts to a limited extent. As a town, Heldburg received all municipal privileges from Landgrave Balthasar of Thuringia, a significant tax reduction and after a while was even exempted from all information for several years so that the town could expand its city fortifications. Heldburg was fortified in the 16th century.

The town gate is still very well preserved, the sandstone passage, which is still clearly visible, is evidence of a train gate.

Five former towers of the former town fortifications can still be found today. These are mostly privately owned and are even part of apartments. The course of the former town wall can also be traced very well. The best preserved part is the Ochsenmauer.
