Between 1970 and 1973, according to the plans of the architect Rolf Ramcke, the present main building was designed as exposed concrete construction in the style of brutalism, which has the layout of an arena open to the city forest Eilenriede. At that time, it was considered one of the most modern buildings built especially for the purpose of an art college. Since 2011, the building is a listed building. Since 1973, the state of Lower Saxony is the institution of the university, which in 1978 received the status of an artistic-scientific university.
