At this location, a large amount of 'groundwater' is pumped up from the dunes every year. The Sint André water extraction area (De Doornpanne) produces drinking water. The groundwater comes from rainwater that slowly seeps into the sand layer where it undergoes natural filtration. Due to the long residence time of the water in the soil, bacteria die and you get safe groundwater of excellent quality, even at a depth of less than 10 meters.

More technical information can be read on site on information boards.

The extraction of groundwater in the dunes is done via two hundred extraction wells, situated around the infiltration site and in the dunes towards Witte Burg. An extraction well is twelve metres deep and consists of an eight-metre smooth and full PVC pipe at the top, with four metres of slotted PVC pipe underneath. The slots or slits are 0.5 mm wide here: the groundwater enters the extraction well via these slots. The slotted part of the extraction well is filled with sand, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the width of the slot. The filling ensures that only water passes through the slits; sand particles are retained and prevent the well from silting up.
