Observation tower / observation platform made of wood (22 meters high)
"The world's first walkable tower in sustainable wood construction"
The tower is 22 meters high. Via a steel staircase with 113 steps. The cost of the observation tower is around 2.2 million euros.
The tower consists of a wooden structure made of 12 centimeter thin, curved panels. These are created by gluing moist wooden slats together. The drying process causes the panels to warp into the intended shape.
The tower design is based on two principles that are taken from biology: Firstly, nature has found ways to use the shrinkage of wood for a controlled shape-changing process. A good example of this is spruce cones, whose wooden scales have been "programmed" by nature so that they change shape when they dry out and open on their own. A similar self-forming process leads to the complex shape of the components of our tower.
Secondly, nature also shows how more shape requires less material. The shape of the tower is not an end in itself, but rather enables a very slim, resource-saving and efficient wooden construction. It is the world's first walkable tower to be built using this innovative and sustainable wooden construction method. Ultimately, the tower is visible from afar and is therefore not only an attraction and landmark, but also an expression of how we can design nature and architecture in a mutually compatible way in the future.

The very worthwhile State Garden Show will take place in Wangen until September 2024. Absolutely recommended 😁😁😁
