The statue was created by Ludwig Vierthaler in 1930, a German sculptor who is one of the most important Hanoverian artists of the 20th century. He died in Hanover in 1967. Also known are the Pelikan fountain in the Eilenriede and the Arthur Quantity fountain in the southern part of the city.
From 1920 Vierthaler was a lecturer at the Technical University of Hanover. In 1921 he became a member of the Hanover Art Association and on July 31, 1922 he was appointed honorary professor. Since the 1930s, his studio has been in Friedrich Kaulbach's villa on Waterloostrasse. From 1933 to 1936 he was a member of the National Socialist German Lecturer Association (NSDDB). In 1945 Vierthaler initiated the establishment of the Association of Visual Artists for Northern Germany, of which he was first chairman until 1953. He organized the first North German art exhibition after the war, which took place in 1946 in the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover. Ludwig Vierthaler was buried in the Engesohde city cemetery.
