"The Elten market square is characterized by an imposing linden tree, which was planted in 1872 as a "peace tree". A bench that offers a shady spot under the tree invites you to linger and watch what is going on in the center of Elten. From here you can see a fountain that was originally built as a horse trough, and historic buildings such as the "Old Town Hall", "Het oude Posthuis" and the "St. Martinus Church".
At the end of the 1950s, Konrad Adenauer gathered his supporters here, and during Elten's famous Butter Night in 1963, the square served as a parking lot for trucks packed with goods subject to customs duties.
