In the 8th century there was a hermitage at Calvary. The church of St. Margaretha on the banks of the Danube was first mentioned in 1381, was destroyed and rebuilt between 1651 and 1654. Extensions followed, and from 1898 to 1976 a hospice was operated by the monastery orders. St. Margarethen is now an independent parish.

I have often driven past the Lower Donaulände, today I “hiked through” it for the first time.
The impressive crucifixion scene with several life-size wooden figures in the Calvary Church of St. Margarethen is particularly worth a trip.

If the church is locked, ring the bell next door. They will be happy to open the church for you.
