This square in Metz is named after the Holy Father, Pope JOHN XXIII, whose real name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. He was born in 1881 near Bergamo (Italy), and was elected Pope in 1958 (the same year the Second Vatican Council was convened). He died in 1963 and was canonized in 2014.
The feast day of Saint-JEAN XXIII in the calendar of saints is October 11 (the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council in 1962), but is also celebrated in parts of the church on October 3.
