The pools in the Meersbeemden are intended as a home for salamanders and brown and green frogs. The yellow wagtail breeds at the old railway bridge and you can regularly see a kingfisher. The Scottish Galloway cattle that graze the area are also a typical feature of the landscape. In addition to many other species, if you are lucky you can see a kingfisher, badger or middle spotted woodpecker.

The Meersbeemden are part of the Herk valley. Here were moist meadows that were used as hay fields. Partly due to the impoundment of water for the nearby watermill company of the new mill, the meadows remained very wet.
