Saint Louis Cemetery is the name of three Roman Catholic cemeteries in New Orleans, Louisiana. The graves are mostly in mausoleums dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially, the graves were also underground. After a series of epidemics broke out around 1830, caused by bodies floating in the water due to the high groundwater level, the city administration issued a decree: burials were only allowed outside the city in Bayou St. John. Burials in cemeteries within the city were only permitted in above-ground graves.

Hiking

The cemeteries of New Orleans are very unique. Most of them have become private and can only be visited by paying a fee to join a tour. For example, the St. Louis Cemetery #1, which was featured in the film “Easy Rider” can only be visited as part of a tour group. The St. Roch Cemetery #1 is open to the public and shares the same aesthetics.
