After the Eighty Years' War, the Roman Catholic religion was not allowed to be openly practiced in the Republic. The Catholics had to go to the chapels in Spanish territory (present-day Belgium). A chapel was also founded on (Belgian) Koewacht in 1687 on the site of the already demolished 'fort van den Coewacht'; The chapel was later replaced by a church. Until the First World War (1915), the Catholics of Dutch Koewacht went to church at Belgian Koewacht. When the German occupiers closed the border with barbed wire (under electricity) (Belgium was occupied and the Netherlands was neutral and remained outside the war), a wooden emergency church was built on the Dutch Koewacht, which was replaced in 1921/1922 by the current church.

The bishop of Breda decided in 2015 that the church can remain open, just like those in Hulst, Kloosterzande and Clinge. The basilica in Hulst is the only one that will continue as a full-fledged parish church. The churches in Graauw, Sint Jansteen, Stoppeldijk (Vogelwaarde) and Terhole will close. The bishop thus adopts the advice of the Saint Mary Star of the Sea parish.
