The first war memorial was built and inaugurated in 1905 through donations. It commemorates the fallen and combatants of the German War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). The memorial was designed and manufactured in 1904 by Karl Landvogt (1867-1935) from Bingen. It is an obelisk made of red sandstone that sits on a structured base.[Note 1] The obelisk is the most cost-effective option among war memorials because they were mass-produced.[Note 2] Various reliefs are attached to the base, such as the Hessian coat of arms in a victor's wreath. The inscription on the obelisk reads: In memory of the campaigns of 1866, 1970 71. The names of the combatants from Ockenheim can be seen on the base. The crosses next to the respective names do not indicate the fallen, but those who had already died in 1905.[Note 3]

To the north of the first war memorial stands the later and second memorial of the town. After the First World War (1914-1918), the people of Ockenheim collected money for the construction of a second war memorial, as 35 men from the town had fallen in the war. Due to inflation, the project was dropped shortly afterwards, only to be taken up again after 1933. A local committee collected money again and commissioned two artists to create designs. The decision was made in favour of Peter Dienstdorf from Wiesbaden.[Note 4] The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone took place on February 3, 1934.[Note 5] The new memorial was finally inaugurated on September 1, 1935.[Note 6] The plaques with the names of the victims and missing persons of the Second World War were added later.[Note 7] 7] There is also a plaque commemorating the Jewish residents of Ockenheim and Gau-Algesheim.

The monument is a triangular structure. On a high, embossed pedestal stands the red sandstone figure of St. George of Cappadocia on horseback, who is about to stab the dragon below with his lance. The sculpture is signed by the artist Dienstdorf and dated 1935.[Note 8] The Bingen town newspaper described the monument on February 2, 1935: “The knight St. George on a rearing horse fighting the dragon is intended to stylize Germany's gigantic fight against a world of enemies and at the same time the Christian faith.
