    History

Since Pentecost 1864, the Coswig Elbe ferry has been operated as a cable ferry based on the principle invented in 1657 by the Dutchman Hendrik Heuck from Nijmegen. Such a cable pontoon, as the ferries were called, hung, as it does today, on a wire rope that splits just before the ferry. One end of the rope is attached to the bow, the other part to the stern. If the lengths of the rope ends are changed relative to each other, the angle of the ferry to the river also changes. The pressure of the incoming water against the inclined ferry body pushes the ferry to the other bank.

      Present

Since the founding of the Coswig (Anhalt) municipal utilities, the ferry has been operated under the direction of the Coswig (Anhalt) municipal utilities.

The ferry has a load capacity of 20 tonnes (t). It is operated all year round, with the exception of January, February and December, at the ferry times listed below, based on the regulation governing the operation of ferries on federal waterways (Ferry Operating Regulations - FäV).

In relation to the river width of around 125 m - at normal water levels - the ferry, with its motorless and therefore environmentally friendly drive, covers an average of around 3,000 km over the course of a year.
