"Combining the useful with the beautiful" was the motto of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, which also included flood protection on the Elbe and Mulde rivers. Thus, from 1770 to 1800, numerous watchtowers were built along the dikes of the Garden Kingdom. These functional buildings were integrated into the beautification of the region through very different external forms. Among them is the so-called "Limesturm" (Limes Tower), in the style of a Roman watchtower. It is marked as the "Hohe(s) Wachhaus" (High Guard House) on the map of the Ducal Offices of Anhalt-Dessau from 1817 and 1818.

The term "Limesturm" was coined by the cultural historian Prof. Dr. Erhard Hirsch. In his work "Dessau-Wörlitz, Enlightenment and Early Classicism," he describes: "The combination of instruction and practice is evident everywhere, from the replica of Hadrian's Walls in northern England in the Luisium period to the archaeological reconstruction of a Roman Limes with a watchtower and a rampart passage, where the Elbe dam shields the Italo-Roman cultural landscape from the 'barbarian tribes' from the north." (Hirsch 1987, p. 217) The named 'barbarian tribes' are an interesting metaphor for the protection of the dike from driftwood and ice during a flood.

In fact, parallels can also be drawn between the structure of the Wall Watch House and the Upper Germanic Limes. Viewed from the Elbe, the cross-section is as follows: a wooded area, a small moat, a row of oak trees (suggesting a "palisade"), then the dike itself, a walkway, and another moat. A dike loophole, which can be closed during floods, is also part of the scenery, which Erhard Hirsch describes as an educational intention as follows:

"Its placement at a culvert (...), its wide-projecting roof, whose overhang provided a sunshade for the observation posts, the oak log palisade placed in front of the embankment (which also slowed the ice blocks in front of the dike during the spring melt), and finally the ditch (here filled with water, used for fish farming and as a watering hole for livestock): All of this as an elaborate, impressive educational program in the background, (...)" (Hirsch: Kleine Schriften zu Dessau-Wörlitz, 2011, p. 57).

The similarity to the dovecotes built around 1800 on the farms of Riesigk, Vockerode, and Griesen cannot be denied, which is why the Limesturm is also often referred to as a "dovecote" by locals. All feature a projecting half-timbered floor above a brick ground floor and a pyramidal or gable roof.

Erhard Hirsch points out that a reference to the motif of a late medieval toll tower, which still stands today on the outer curve of the Circus Maximus in Rome, is clearly conceivable.
