The Kleine Kragewiel, which is located just behind the dike, was created by a dike breach in 1552. A persistent storm created a breach in the Spierenbroek. This breach flooded the polders behind it from Branst to Eikevliet. You can still find several ‘wielen’ in the Bornem landscape.

According to legend, the storm subsided after the procession with a statue of Mary and the breach could only be closed after 5 years. The rising water had free rein in the landscape all those years. The large bodies of water ‘fishponds’ in the wider area around Bornem are still silent witnesses to dike breaches.

Perhaps that is why the towpath attracts so many ‘cycling’ tourists…

There is a picnic bench at the Kleine Kragewiel, which invites you to linger for a while.
