The traditional access to the ‘Rinpung Dzong’ is via the wooden footbridge called ‘Nyamai Zam’. The original bridge probably dates back to the 18th century.

The Nyamai Zam, a traditional covered wooden bridge located directly below Paro Dzong, is a cantilevered canopy bridge spanning the Paro Chu River. The bridge was rebuilt in 1969 after the older bridge was washed away in a flood. An earlier version of this bridge was removed during the war to protect the dzong.
