The Albrechtsburg Castle on the castle hill in Meissen is one of the most famous late Gothic architectural monuments and is considered the first palace building in Germany.[1] From 1471 onwards, the Wettin Electors and Dukes of Saxony had a residential palace built there on the site of an older medieval castle. In 1710, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory moved in. After 1864, the castle was redesigned again, and numerous rooms were decorated with historical paintings. Today, the hilltop castle is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention[2] and houses a permanent exhibition on the eventful history of the site.

The castle hill was inhabited from the late Bronze Age to the Germanic period. However, no traces of fortifications have been found so far.

When King Henry I destroyed the Sorbian folk castle of Gana in 929, he searched for a site for a new castle. He found one between the Elbe, Triebisch, and Meisa rivers. The towering rock on which the castle, later known as Misni (Meissen), was built was ideally suited for controlling the region. Because of its location above the Elbe, the Albrechtsburg is also called the "Saxon Acropolis." The chronicler Thietmar of Merseburg reports that he found a wooded hill. Henry's castle consisted of a number of wooden structures surrounded by a wood-and-earth wall. The name of Misni Castle refers to the small stream Misni (Meisa, see Meisa Valley), which flows into the Elbe just below the castle hill.
