The location-defining Protestant Nikolaikirche was at DDR-times dilapidated, collapse-endangered and not used since 1975. The baroque tower dome was demolished in 1984 and replaced by a flat emergency roof. At the turn of the millennium, a project for the preservation of the church was founded (Wikipedia).
