Professor Sybrandus Fockema Andreae had this dome built in 1902. As a legal scholar in Leiden, he needed a quiet place where he could retreat to write his scientific articles. This dome was placed in the backyard of his parental home. His father was a notary, hence the name Notary Dome.
In 1928 the Lycklama à Nijeholt family bought the garden from the Notary. The dome was used as a gazebo.
