The crossing with the small ferry is very comfortable and takes quite a long time because the pier on the Speyer side is protected in an old arm of the Rhine and the boat has to make a large curve.
The ferry runs on weekends and public holidays; during the week you have to find other ways across the Rhine.
I can only recommend it, you should do it at least once.
