After the fatal outcome of the Battle of Murten on June 22, 1476 in Burgundy, there were around 10,000 fallen Burgundians and their allies on the battlefield. After 3 days of watch, as was customary, the landowners were forced to bury the dead on the spot, then in two pits. About ten years after the battle, the bones and skulls were exhumed and taken to the specially built ossuary, which was filled to the ceiling.

In 1822, the canton of Fribourg erected this obelisk as a memorial to the Battle of Murten. In its place there previously stood an ossuary that was destroyed by the French in 1798.
