In 1822, the canton of Fribourg erected this obelisk as a memorial to the Battle of Murten. In its place there previously stood an ossuary that was destroyed by the French in 1798.

On the site of the former ossuary of the canton of Fribourg, the latter had the obelisk erected in 1822 to commemorate the Battle of Murten. It is 18 meters high.
