The Kühlungsborn station is located on the Mecklenburg coast between the island of Poel in the west and the Warnow estuary in the east. Around ten volunteer sea rescuers, led by First Mate Eyck Schuppang, are deployed there. Their territory extends from the Baltic Sea to the major shipping routes between the Bay of Lübeck on the one hand and Scandinavia and the Baltic States on the other.

The town of Kühlungsborn was formed in 1938 through the merger of the two towns of Arendsee (in the west) and Brunshaupten (in the east). The German Sea Rescue Service (DGzRS) established a station in Arendsee as early as 1882. The sea rescuers still use the historic rescue shed as their station building today. It once housed a rowing lifeboat and rocket launcher; in modern times, after German reunification, it houses a sea rescue boat on a trailer with a Unimog as the tractor.
