It is quite rightly called the Dietharz Sea: The Schmalwasser Dam was built between 1988 and 1993 to supply drinking water to northern Thuringia and has a storage volume of 21.4 million m³. Its almost 80 m high and 325 m long rockfill dam is Germany's highest and one of the ten largest in the world. A circular hiking trail with fantastic views takes you around the Schmalwasser Dam. Two short detours take you to the famous Falkenstein climbing rock and the Röllchen mountain gorge.

The "Old Tambach Dam" is located directly on the southern edge of the health resort, nestled in the idyllic Apfelstädter Grund. It was put into operation in 1905 to supply Gotha with water. A 9 km long circular path leads around its banks. From the Wagenstädter Bridge, several hiking trails and the Apfelstädt cycle path take you into the pristine nature around Tambach-Dietharz.
From May to October, there are guided tours of the "Old Tambach Dam". Once a year, an open-air dam concert also takes place at the old dam wall.
