The mascot was designed by painter António Modesto and sculptor Artur Moreira, and was chosen from 309 proposals. The name “Gil” was given in homage to the Portuguese navigator Gil Eanes. The figure symbolises life in the oceans, in line with the theme of Expo’98, which was “Oceans: A heritage for the future”.

The name was chosen by José Luís Coelho, who was 10 years old at the Barrancos Primary School and took part in a competition involving schools from all over the country. After the exhibition closed, the mascot became the emblem of the Gil Foundation, whose mission is to promote the clinical, social and emotional well-being of children and young people.
