Mallorca is one of the regions with the most lime in all of Spain. Lime burning is a craft that is thousands of years old and dates back to antiquity. During the burning process, the limestone decomposes in the lime kiln at a temperature of around 1,000 °C to form calcium oxide, known as quicklime, and CO². Because of its corrosive effect, quicklime is also known as caustic lime. When mixed with water and sand, it finally produces lime mortar, which was used as plaster in house building.
