To the north, the first forecourt of the castle is cordoned off by the mighty Georgstor, which is named after its builder, Duke Georg the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut. On the outside, the Bavarian (left) and Polish coats of arms (right) refer to the client, Duke Georg the Rich, and his wife Hedwig, a Polish king's daughter. The couple's marriage in 1475 went down in history as the "Landshut Wedding".

Shortly before the Georgstor - under the wooden bridge - a passage connects the Wöhrsee with the old town.

With a length of just over 1000 meters, Burghausen Castle is one of the longest castles in the world (the Guinness Book of Records even declared it the longest castle ever). The complex, which is still surrounded by almost intact ring walls, stretches high above the town of Burghausen on a narrow ridge between the Salzach and its oxbow, the Wöhrsee. Five large courtyards, formerly secured by ditches and gates, divide the mountain plateau as sections of the fortification. With their defensive walls, gates and towers and the farm buildings and residential buildings for court officials and craftsmen, they form the beginning of the entire complex, which culminates in the mighty core castle around the inner castle courtyard at the southern tip of the castle hill. Burghausen Castle enjoys an outstanding position due to its historical importance as the sovereign castle of the Bavarian Wittelsbachs and its architectural status as one of the greatest late medieval fortifications. The mighty bulwark was considered the strongest fortress in the country and embodied the Bavarian dukes' desire for power and representation.

From 1255 to 1503, the castle was the second residence of the Lower Bavarian dukes residing in Landshut. As a secure family residence, it fulfilled a variety of functions during this time: it served as the court of the duchesses and the place where their children were brought up, as the residence of the Crown Prince and Princess, and as a widow's residence. The wealthy dukes of Bavaria-Landshut kept their gold and silver treasures in the fortified fortress.

Its most famous resident was the wife of Duke George the Rich, the Polish king's daughter Hedwig, whose marriage to the Bavarian duke is still remembered today by the famous Landshut Wedding.

Very beautiful castle with views of the old town, Salzach and the Wöhrsee. Admission only costs the different museums.
