The Schwentine River flows 200 meters through Plön. You can follow it on foot along its entire course, sometimes on one bank, sometimes on the other. Large willow trees caress the water with their delicate, hanging branches. The district town is an architectural demonstration of how a river can be vividly integrated into the landscape.

At 68 km, the Schwentine is one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein. It rises 1.7 km southwest of the highest point in the state, the Bungsberg, on a spring meadow northeast of the village of Bergfeld and flows through the entire Holstein Switzerland with numerous large lakes.
