It could hardly be more opposite: orchards with their tall, robust fruit trees are an artificial product and yet are of the greatest ecological importance today, because hardly any biotope has a comparable biodiversity:
Up to 3,000 animal and plant species have been identified in old orchards.
This is made possible by the stratification from grassland to sparse trees, which offers a diverse range of habitats. The annual fruit blossoms and the extensively used meadows in the undergrowth provide food for bees, bumblebees and wasps; the fallen fruit also attracts insects, birds and small mammals. Hazel voles, dormice and many species of birds find nesting opportunities in the hollows of old trees.

2,000 apple varieties known. Today you can only find it in stores
about 30 to 40 varieties.
