Natural rock formations, which rarely occur on a large scale in eastern Thuringia, are extreme habitats and each one is unique in its own way. The type of rock, the age and weathering, the geographical location, the sunlight and the plants in the area lay the "foundation stone" for the individual settlement of the rock walls. Lichens, mosses, grasses and herbs, even individual trees can grow on rocks, in crevices and establish niches.
The Colliser Alps, especially the south-sloping steep slopes of the Rotlegen, were created by natural erosion. They are furrowed by many water channels, sparsely overgrown with dry grassland vegetation and occasional drought-tolerant shrubs, such as broom. Typical animal species include the heat-loving ones, incredible. nimble sand lizard and the black redstart, which can be easily recognized by its characteristic trembling tail.
