The original castle was named on the occasion of the marriage of the son of the Hungarian king Bela IV to Cunigunde of Brandenburg in 1264. The castle was destroyed in the war between Rudolf I of Habsburg and Ottokar II of Přemysl in 1270/1271. The successor building from the 14th century was called Castrum Kuchhe in 1363.

From 1974 to 2008, the palace housed the Ethnographic Museum, which displayed a permanent collection of folk art from Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as current special exhibitions.
