Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Memorial stands opposite of the State House on the northern edge of Boston Common. This memorial honors Colonel Shaw and the 54th Regiment, one of the first African American units in the Civil War. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and unveiled in 1897, the centerpiece is a bronze relief showing Shaw leading his troops into battle. The memorial serves as a reminder of the fight for freedom and equality, highlighting the resilience of African American soldiers who faced discrimination but bravely served their country. The monument is also the starting point for the Black Heritage Trail.

It is supposed to be the monument for the first regiment with African-American soldiers
