Best Hikes to Gold Washer’s Stone (Godelsbergerstein)

Tips

  • There is a large boulder in the stream bed of the Gregnitz. A hole about 15 cm deep and 10 cm in diameter is carved into this granite stone. According to tradition, this stone was used by the Venetians in the Middle Ages to pan for gold. Gold-bearing boulders were placed in the circular depression and pounded. The sand was washed out by the water while the gold grains remained at the bottom.
