The Snake Mountain nature reserve is a 108 hectare area characterized by its calamine flora. The entire nature reserve is located on a limestone ridge. About 200 million years ago, aqueous ore solutions penetrated the porous limestone and the primary ores zinc blende, marcasite and galena were formed. Through metasomatosis, the superficial ore weathered to form the secondary ore calamine, which mainly consists of zinc spar ZnCO3. The calamine flora occurs in areas of nutrient-poor limestone soils where the calamine ores are on the surface. Due to the high content of toxic heavy metals, the otherwise common plants are suppressed, so that heavy metal-resistant plants, the calamine flora, are created. The calamine flora is a unique botanical feature that only occurs in the ore fields of Kelmis (B) and Stolberg (Breinigerberg). Over generations, the plant developed resistance to heavy metals and an independent species emerged: the calamine violet (viola lutea calaminaria). Other types of calamine flora include calamine purse, common grass, spring meadow and pigeon goiter.
