In the 13th century, the barons of Vaz allowed a group of Walsers to settle on one of their farms, which was located next to the churbishop's estates in Romanen, where sheep were mainly raised. Since then, Alvaneu has been located on the German-Romance language border. The origin of the place name, which was first documented in a designation of origin (Hainricus de Aluenude) in 1244, is unclear. Alvaneu was the first municipality in Graubünden to vote in favor of joining the Helvetic Republic in 1799.
