The basis for “intervention compensation regulations” is a legally anchored ban on deterioration of nature and the landscape. The idea behind it is that if there are unavoidable deteriorations caused by a construction project, nature and the landscape will be improved elsewhere.

Along the Natura Trail we find four areas that were used to compensate for the construction of the wind farm and the commercial area in the community. That's 5 hectares on which intensive agriculture no longer takes place, a total of 10 wet biotopes with open water areas and another approx. 2500 m² with constant flooding. For this purpose, hedge strips have been created on 9,000 m², which provide food and shelter for a variety of birds, small mammals, insects and spiders.

To keep the areas free, they are extensively grazed by cattle. As a result, the biodiversity of plants, animals and fungi has multiplied.

There is a very high density of different grasshoppers here, which reveal their presence on summer days with their loud and varied concert. Bees, bumblebees and butterflies find food on many different flowers or also become food for birds, spiders or insects. By planting ten groups of “Young Giant” trees, offshoots of natural monuments in the Kassel district (oaks and lime trees), additional biodiversity hotspots are created on the largest meadow area.

This highlight is part of the Natura Trail "Waldmeisterweg - From the Ems Valley to the Dogs of Falkenstein": komoot.com/de-de/tour/1473694241
