On the Leuven side of the Stierke sunken road (probably a nickname of a former owner of the meadows around it) you will find red chalice mushrooms at the end of winter. You will also find a lot of blackthorn, an important plant for the large population of (endangered) blackthorn on the Koeheide.

Blackthorn wings fly from early July to late September and are difficult to observe because they often live high in the treetops.
The sunken road is also very worthwhile in itself. Muddy and slippery on some days, clear signs of inhabitants here and there in the edges but beautiful. It can also be quite busy for such a small road. Even in rainy weather we met about ten hikers, almost always in pairs. And then sometimes you have to pull over because the road is narrow in some places or sometimes too slippery to pass safely.

Anyone who needs to take a breather after descending the sunken road (which can also be quite tiring) will find a simple bench at the end.

The sunken road of Stierke cuts the Stierke meadow, a plot of the Koeheide nature reserve on the edge of Bertembos, in half. It was the sunken road that brought the people of Leuven to Bertembos for centuries. The road was used as a landfill for years and was made open and accessible again more than 10 years ago by the Dijleland Regional Landscape.

A beautiful but steep sunken road that takes you from below in Bertembos back to the exit at Gasthuisberg via a beautiful path through the fields. This is usually very muddy.
