Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw - academy of fine arts in Warsaw, the oldest Polish art school. In 1816, the Department of Fine Arts was established at the University of Warsaw[2], with professors including: Marcello Bacciarelli and Zygmunt Vogel. After the dissolution of the University of Warsaw in 1831, the Russian authorities established the School of Fine Arts in 1844, attached to the Real Gymnasium. Its students took an active part in the patriotic demonstrations of 1860–1861 and in the January Uprising, which resulted in its dissolution in 1864. In 1865, it was reactivated as the Drawing Class, from 1871 called the "Wojciech Gerson School" after its long-time director and professor. . In 1920, the Drawing Class was transformed into the Municipal School of Decorative Arts and Painting in Warsaw. In 1904, the School of Fine Arts was re-established, whose professors included, among others: Konrad Krzyżanowski, Karol Tichy, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Xawery Dunikowski, while the first director was Kazimierz Stabrowski. In the years 1909–1920, the school was headed by Stanisław Lentz. In 1932, the school was transformed into the Academy of Fine Arts.

After the end of World War II, the university was reactivated and in 1950 it was merged with the Higher School of Fine Arts, continuing the tradition of the Municipal School of Decorative Arts and Painting. At that time it was called the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1957, it was renamed the Academy of Fine Arts.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw is the oldest Polish art school, located in the Czapski Palace at 5 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. Its origins date back to 1816, when the Department of Fine Arts was established at the University of Warsaw. In later years, the school changed its name and organization several times – including as the School of Fine Arts (1844), the Drawing Class (1865) and again as the School of Fine Arts (1904). In 1932, it gained the status of the Academy of Fine Arts. After World War II, it was reactivated and merged with the Higher School of Fine Arts. Since 1957, it has operated under its current name.
