The earliest documented settlement of the site dates back to the 11th century, as archaeological finds show. A late medieval successor building was destroyed in 1576. It was replaced by a new building, which fell victim to a fire in 1816 and was not rebuilt. A distillery was built on the castle grounds. (Jens Friedhoff)
