The Merskenheide is a beautiful forest and heathland area near the village of Ureterp. The history of Merskenheide begins in the High Middle Ages, when the stream valley of the Koningsdiep and surrounding area still mainly consisted of raised peat. The raised bog was exploited for agriculture in the High Middle Ages. But as a result of the extraction, the underlying cover sand ridges increasingly emerged. These infertile cover sand ridges were not suitable for agriculture and therefore quickly degraded to heathland.
