Friedrich Schiller acquired the residential building built in 1777 in today's Schillerstrasse in 1802 for himself and his family. He had to borrow heavily to raise the required purchase amount. The family lived in the house until the death of Charlotte von Schiller in 1826. In 1847 it came into municipal ownership and in the same year became the first publicly accessible memorial site of a poet in Germany. In 1945 it was heavily damaged by a bombing raid, but reopened in 1946.
