The history of this church is linked to that of the nearby Saint Peter's Abbey, which was destroyed by the French revolutionary troops in 1794. This burial and parish church - and later also collegiate church - was a place of pilgrimage for Saint Ursmarus, one of the founders of the abbey (7th century).
This building is a concrete example of the Carolingian or pre-Romanesque church buildings that were preceded on the western side by a large gallery. The Romanesque parts of the church are also admirable. It has a floor plan in the form of a Latin cross with a false western transept. The nave is the oldest part of the church. The choir, the tower and the portal date from the 11th century. The Romanesque, vaulted crypt in hall style contains the sarcophagi of Saints Ursmarus and Erminus and remarkable tombstones of abbots between the 15th and 18th centuries.

The collegiate church was originally dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel around the 12th century. The only thing that reminds us of this Romanesque period are the remains integrated into the current church. The "three generations" tower provides an overview of the history and changes that the church underwent between the 12th and 17th centuries. Inside is the treasury of the collegiate church, with objects such as ancient chalices and reliquaries of the canons of the chapter of Lobbes.
