The coal mining associated with the slag heap began in 1913 and ended in 19594. The Saint-Emmanuel pit was sunk between 1835 & 1843. It will include 2 shafts, one for extraction, the other for depletion. The extraction shaft is 558 m deep. In 1913, a headframe was erected in the extraction shaft. The Saint Emmanuel pit will be closed on December 31, 1959. The shafts will only be used for pumping out until the shutdown of Charbonnage du Quesnoy in Trivières, on June 15, 1973. They will then be backfilled.
