Anyone who has ever driven through Zoutleeuw has certainly passed this Renaissance house at the narrow constriction where you leave the historic center of the tiny town. It is known as Burgerhuis Hellespiegel or Spiegelhuis and dates from the sixteenth century. Quote: "Previously dated 157(1?), (wall anchors in gable end). Remarkable Renaissance building made of brick and sandstone. Volute facade with two floors with cross windows; crowning enriched with ionic pilasters on classically tinted pedestals, profiled girdle mouldings, beautiful volutes enlivened with animal and foliage motifs (mutilated heads)." The Spiegel or the Spiegelhuis (Spieghelhuys) in Zoutleeuw is a historic building on the Grote Markt. The date of construction is unknown; old postcards indicate 1471, but more recent publications indicate 1571. The oldest known owner of the corner house was Hildegund van Linter. In April 1358, she transferred the usufruct of the house next to the Lakenhuis to her children. The name Spiegel first appears in 1600. The house was named after the former owner Helspieghel. The building is a traditional brick construction with sandstone elements in Renaissance style. The building was restored in 1961 and is protected as a monument.
