St John the Baptist Church was built by William I in 1079 when he created the New Forest, although its use as a place of worship may be considerably older. It is well worth exploring its interior to learn how this medieval church has changed over the centuries and to see the engraved Millennium window, which celebrates the village's religious connections to the Forest.

The Rev William Gilpin, rector from 1777 until his death in 1804, was well known and regarded within the literacy circles for his writings about the New Forest and its scenery. He was a prolific artist and credited as founding the 'picturesque' style of paintings. He used proceeds from his writing and original drawings to build a village school to provide poor parish children with an education. Both Gilpin and his wife are buried in the churchyard.
