Today it is believed that the name of the “Teerlingbos” at Passchendaele, located behind the old cheese factory, towards Tyne Cot Cemetery, comes from its square shape (terling shape).
A legend also tells that there used to be a castle or walled farm in the forest. One night the castle sank completely into the water and nothing was ever found again. In any case, today a piece of the wall can still be seen in the approximately 2 hectare forest. The poet may also allude to this with his words “giant earthwork” and “stone intestines”. In earlier times, the Teerlingbos also frequently featured in ghost and witch stories.
During the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, there was very hard fighting in and around the grove that forms the border with “Het Rozeveld”. On October 4 there was the successful attack by the Anzac troops (Australians and New Zealanders). During the capture of “Berlin Wood” (as that is what the Allies called the forest), the New Zealanders of the 3rd Canterbury Battalion recorded 250 losses, of which 50 were killed, when they attacked some very well-defended German bunkers (on and around the Baelen farm, now Vandecandelaere) bumped. The memorial for the New Zealand Division on the corner of the 's Graventafel crossroads pays tribute to the many Kiwis who died in the Battle of Passchendaele.
