At the time of the Peace of Munster with Spain in 1648, Frederik van den Bergh ruled from the castle in Boxmeer. He refused to bow down to what he considered the 'heretic and rebellious Protestant States General'. After a number of years of a strict Roman regime with wars and intrigues from the castle, Grand Pensionary Schimmelpenninck put an end to this phenomenon in 1805; From that time on, Boxmeer was part of the Batavian Republic.
