The baroque sandstone sculpture of the Virgin Mary, an Immaculata, which originally stood near the Warendorf Franciscan monastery, has been located on Marienkirchplatz since 1987. Originally owned by the Marienfeld Cistercian monastery, it came to Warendorf after secularization. When the Franciscan monastery was dissolved in the Kulturkampf, it came into the possession of the farmer Bussmann in 1876, who brought the sculpture to the Holtrup farming community in Westkirchen and installed it near his farm. (See under: Westkirchen/Holtrup/Klosterkamp.) The image returned home in the Marian Year of 1954 and was ceremoniously inaugurated on May 30, 1955. The sculpture was initially placed in the former city moat on the promenade, which has now been filled in, was moved again in 1972 when the street was widened at the east gate and finally found its way to St. Mary's Church in 1987. The year of its creation is encrypted in the inscription TrIstIbVs DVLCe LeVaMen (1717).

For a stranger it is impressive - a church and a tower of another in one square...
