The name Hinkelstein is an old field name. It goes back to a large menhir at the western end of the Hinkelsteinschneise, which runs south of the Main Railway in an east-west direction. The area around the Hinkelstein was on the extreme western border of the city forest. To protect it, the Hinkelstein forester's lodge was built in 1739 and was used until 1972. Today it is a guest house, the associated barn is the clubhouse of the T.U.S 1884
